Why Our Free Tier Is Actually Free — And What That Says About Who We Build For

A founder's note on why AnooreHR's ₦0/month tier for three staff or fewer is genuinely free, not a crippled trial — and the philosophy behind it.

Most "free" software for small businesses is not free. It is a countdown. You get 14 days, or you get a version so hollowed out it cannot run a single real payroll. The moment your business does anything that matters — pays a second person, files a return, closes a month — a paywall appears.

We did the opposite. AnooreHR is ₦0 per month for three staff or fewer, and it stays that way. No trial clock. No feature amputation on the parts that count. This is a note on why we built it that way, who it is for, and the business logic underneath — because we would rather be honest about the trade-off than pretend there isn't one.

What "actually free" means here

A free tier is only real if the free user can do the whole job. So on the free tier you get the real product, not a demo of it:

CapabilityOn the free tier?
Employee records, leave, onboardingYes
Payroll run with the country tax engineYes
PAYE, pension and statutory deductions computedYes
Payslips on every staff member's phoneYes
Double-entry general ledger, payroll posted to itYes
The AI assistant to ask questions of your booksYes

The limit is headcount, not capability. Three staff or fewer, and you run a compliant payroll that posts straight into a real ledger. That is the same engine a 300-person company uses. We did not build a toy and a real product. We built one product and set the meter to zero at the bottom.

A free tier that cannot run your actual payroll is not a free tier. It is a brochure with a login.

Who this is actually for

Three names, in our heads, the whole time we designed this.

The first-time employer — the founder who just hired their first person and suddenly owes PAYE and pension and has no idea how. Under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025, the first ₦800,000 of an employee's annual income is now tax-free before the progressive bands begin (PwC Tax Summaries, effective 1 January 2026 — confirm current figures with the Nigeria Revenue Service). That single change rewired how remittances are calculated. A first-time employer should not have to become a tax expert to get it right, and should not have to pay a subscription to find out they got it wrong.

The micro-business — the two-person agency, the family shop, the solo consultant with one assistant. Real revenue, real obligations, budgets measured in tens of thousands of naira, not thousands of dollars. This is the largest, most underserved slice of the African economy, and it is the slice most software quietly prices out.

The business about to grow — the outfit at two or three staff today that will be at eight next year. We want the tooling to be already there, already trusted, already holding their ledger, when that day comes.

If you are one of these, the free tier is not a lead magnet aimed at you. It is the product, built for you.

The honest business logic

Here is the part most companies leave out, so we will say it plainly.

The free tier is an on-ramp. We are not a charity. The bet is simple: give the smallest businesses real tooling, earn their trust while the stakes are low, and grow with them. When staff number four arrives, you move to a paid tier — and by then AnooreHR is not a vendor you are evaluating, it is where your ledger already lives.

That is the deal, and it only works if two things are true. First, the free tier has to be genuinely good, or nobody stays long enough to grow. Second, the paid tiers have to earn their price on their own merits — more staff, group consolidation across multiple entities, deeper finance — not by holding your basic payroll hostage. We would rather win the fourth employee because the product is worth paying for than because we crippled the third.

And the pricing scales in your local currency — Naira today, and Cedi, Shilling and more as those country packs come online. No dollar floor. A Lagos micro-business is not billed against a San Francisco cost base.

The trade-off we accept

Honest limit: a genuinely free tier costs us money on day one. Every free company runs on infrastructure we pay for, with support we provide, generating ₦0. Most investors would tell you to shorten the trial and gate the good parts. We chose the slower, more expensive path because we think the smallest SMEs deserve real tooling — and because we would rather build a business that is trusted at the bottom than one that is merely tolerated at the top.

The flip side of honesty: if you never grow past three staff, you may never pay us a naira. We are fine with that. You are still a compliant, well-run business using software built for you, and you are the best reference we could ask for.

What it says about who we build for

You can read a company's real priorities off its free tier. If the free tier is a trap, the company is built to extract. If the free tier is genuinely useful, the company is built to serve first and earn second.

We are an operating system for African SMEs — HR, payroll and finance in one platform, Nigeria live today and more countries arriving as profile packs. That mission does not start at the enterprise and trickle down. It starts at the founder hiring their first employee, and grows up.

Does AnooreHR handle this?

Yes — this is the product, not a preview of it. Start on the free tier with three staff or fewer and run a real, country-compliant payroll that posts straight into a double-entry ledger, with payslips on every phone and an AI assistant to ask plain-language questions of your books. When you grow, the paid tiers add headcount, multi-entity group consolidation and deeper finance. Create your account at AnooreHR, or book a quick demo if you want a walkthrough first.
